Azerbaijan Mining Industry guide

Azerbaijan Mining Industry

Azerbaijan’s mining industry combines established gold and copper operations with a pipeline of exploration, mine development and metallurgical projects. Its mineral resources include gold, copper, molybdenum, iron ore and polymetallic deposits.

From Mineral Resources to Mining and Processing Operations

The sector’s next phase is shaped by the 2027–2030 State Programme for Mining and Metallurgy Development, which prioritises updated geological assessments, deposit development and domestic processing capacity.

Established Operators and Production Centres

AzerGold: Gold Mining and Integrated Processing

State-owned AzerGold CJSC operates the Chovdar Integrated Regional Processing Area (CIRPA) in Dashkasan. The centre processes precious-metal ores from Chovdar and nearby deposits, using different technologies according to ore characteristics.

Its processing infrastructure includes heap leaching and a Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) plant, which entered full operation in 2024 with an annual ore grinding capacity of 1.1 million tonnes. This regional processing model supports the development of nearby deposits through shared facilities.

Chapter 02

Anglo Asian Mining: Copper and Gold Operations

Anglo Asian Mining operates the Gedabek production and processing centre, where infrastructure includes flotation, agitation leaching, heap leaching and SART processing. The Gilar underground copper-gold mine began production in May 2025.

The company also operates Demirli, a copper mine in the Karabakh Economic Region that entered production in 2025. The site comprises two adjoining open pits, a 6-million-tonne-per-year copper flotation plant and a smaller molybdenum flotation plant.

These operations demonstrate the sector’s use of both surface and underground mining, supported by established mineral-processing infrastructure.

Chapter 04

Expanding the Domestic Value Chain

The national strategy extends beyond extracting ore. Planned facilities associated with the West Industrial Park include iron ore beneficiation, pelletising and hot briquetted iron production.

Azerbaijan also has an established aluminium industry through Azeraluminium’s Ganja production complex, encompassing primary aluminium, casting and rolling. The national programme targets annual aluminium production of 100,000 tonnes by the end of 2030.

Existing operations, planned facilities and exploration projects represent different stages of development, each with distinct technical and investment requirements.

Chapter 05

Relevance for Equipment and Service Suppliers

This industry landscape provides potential applications for mining machinery, drilling equipment, processing technologies, material handling, power systems, laboratory services and environmental solutions.

For suppliers, the starting point is understanding the deposit, operating conditions and project stage—and demonstrating how their products address specific technical requirements.
