Karabakh & East Zangezur Mining Opportunities guide

Karabakh & East Zangezur Mining Opportunities

Karabakh and East Zangezur are priority regions in Azerbaijan’s 2027–2030 mining and metallurgy development programme. The strategy combines the development of known mineral deposits with modern reserve assessments and further geological exploration.

Connecting Regional Mine Development with International Expertise

For equipment manufacturers, engineering firms and service providers, the regions present potential applications across exploration, mine development, processing and supporting infrastructure.

Chapter 01

Priority Areas for Development

Aghdara: Mining and Processing at Demirli

Demirli, located in the Karabakh Economic Region, entered production in 2025. Operated by Anglo Asian Mining, the site comprises two adjoining open pits, a 6-million-tonne-per-year copper flotation plant and a smaller molybdenum flotation plant.

Known extensions to the pit area and nearby copper targets have also been identified for future evaluation.

Relevant supplier capabilities: open-pit machinery, haulage equipment, flotation systems, pumps, wear parts, process control, maintenance and exploration services.

Chapter 02

Kalbajar and Zangilan: Reserve Assessment and Deposit Development

The national programme identifies known gold, copper and molybdenum deposits across Kalbajar, Aghdara and Zangilan as priorities for development.

An important part of this work is updating historical reserve information using modern geological methods. Further exploration is also planned within these districts and neighbouring areas.

Relevant supplier capabilities: geological surveying, drilling, sampling, laboratory testing, resource modelling, metallurgical studies and mine planning.

Chapter 03

Opportunities Across the Project Lifecycle

Exploration and Technical Studies

Modern geological data will help establish the scale and characteristics of mineral resources and inform development decisions.

Potential applications include drilling rigs, downhole tools, geophysical systems, analytical equipment and specialist geological services.

Chapter 04

Mine Development and Site Infrastructure

As projects progress through assessment and approval, their development may require earthmoving machinery, access infrastructure, power supply, water systems and material handling equipment.

Engineering firms and equipment suppliers can position their capabilities around the specific conditions and development stage of each site.

Chapter 05

Processing and Environmental Management

The national strategy emphasises establishing beneficiation and processing capacity where justified by mineral discoveries and project economics. Environmental assessment and compliance are also explicit priorities.

Potential applications include crushing, grinding, flotation, water recycling, tailings management, dust control and environmental monitoring.

Chapter 06

Understand the Opportunity Before Entering the Market

The regions include operating facilities alongside deposits that require further exploration, technical studies or development decisions. Supplier discussions should therefore be based on the project’s current stage, responsible operator and procurement requirements.

The application areas described here indicate potential commercial relevance; they do not represent confirmed tenders or purchasing commitments.
