Why Azerbaijan guide

Why Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan is placing mining and metallurgy at the centre of its efforts to diversify beyond oil and gas. Its 2027–2030 State Programme prioritises mineral exploration, deposit development and domestic processing—creating potential opportunities for companies supplying equipment, technology and specialist services.

A New Investment Cycle for Mining and Metallurgy

For businesses evaluating the market, the opportunity extends across the production chain: from identifying mineral resources to developing mines, processing ore and producing finished materials.

Chapter 01

Mineral Resources with Defined Development Priorities

The programme identifies several areas of focus:

  1. 01

Karabakh and East Zangezur: Development of known gold, copper and molybdenum deposits in Kalbajar, Aghdara and Zangilan, alongside further exploration and updated reserve assessments.

  2. 02

Filizchay, Balakan: Preparation of the polymetallic deposit for development, with feasibility work and a final investment decision as key next steps.

  3. 03

Dashkasan: Development of the iron ore value chain, including planned beneficiation, pelletising and hot briquetted iron facilities associated with the West Industrial Park.

  4. 04

Nakhchivan: Geological exploration expected to begin in 2027 to assess the region’s mineral potential.

These projects are at different stages of development. Together, they provide concrete areas for suppliers and service providers to assess where their capabilities may fit.

Chapter 02

Opportunities Beyond Extraction

Azerbaijan’s strategy emphasises processing mineral resources domestically and retaining more value within the country. Alongside mining development, the programme targets annual aluminium production of 100,000 tonnes by the end of 2030.

For equipment manufacturers and engineering firms, this broadens the potential market beyond extraction to include:

  1. 01

Geological surveying, drilling and resource assessment.

  2. 02

    Mining machinery, components and maintenance.

  3. 03

Crushing, screening, beneficiation and process engineering.

  4. 04

Conveying, pumping, power supply and site infrastructure.

  5. 05

Automation, laboratory testing and environmental management.

Chapter 03

A Market for Technical Expertise

Modern reserve assessments, processing facilities and environmental standards are central to the programme’s priorities.

Companies that can demonstrate how their solutions improve productivity, support reliable operations or manage environmental impacts have a clear basis for starting commercial discussions. Understanding each project’s development stage and purchasing requirements will be essential.

Build Relationships at the Start of the Programme

Azerbaijan Mining Expo 2027 takes place during the first year of the 2027–2030 programme.

It offers a timely setting to introduce your products, discuss industry requirements and explore relationships with potential customers and local partners as the market develops.
